Green Seen

Our colleague Jim Henry recently wrote in bnet.com  abou a survey that claimed the wealthy are buying more fuel efficient cars, concerned as they are about the price of fuel. Wait, those who buy a house with the floor space of the USS Enterprise with the concurrent carbon footprint of Godzilla in a coal mine (think Barbara Streisand, Al Gore and John Edwards) and believe themselves greener than Kermit will worry about the cost of fuel? more

Start the SUV, Marge, there’s a glacier in the front yard!

We know we’re supposed to be concerned about global warming–or global climate change, since that covers just about anything that happens–if for no other reason than it looks good, as Automotive News editorial director Peter Brown advised GM major domo Bob Lutz. Apparently one needn’t believe in global warming as long as one doesn’t say so. Or else people who think they’re being green won’t buy your cars. To paraphrase Henry Ford, truth is bunk. more

Giving Al the cold shoulder?

Just when you thought it was safe to ride in a Prius with Al Gore—well, Al Gore, Sr., anyway—out comes a scientific report that anyone driving a mega-SUV has been Saving the Planet after all.

IBDeditorials.com* cites one R. Timothy Patterson, professor of geology and director of the Ottawa-Carleton Geoscience Centre of Canada’s Carleton University. R. Timothy has been examining more than 5000 holes punched in the mud at the bottom of Western Canada’s fjords** or at least the core samples punched therefrom. And like hundreds of other studies from tree rings in Russia’s Kola Peninsula to water levels in the Nile, the mud supports a theory that the sun is the prime mover of the temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere and that changes in the temperature of the sun coincide with temperatures on Earth. It’s sort of like throwing another log in the wood stove. What a novel concept. more
